“How much does New River Academy cost?”
Often, schools or businesses will not publish costs of a product when they feel the price is high or that the cost will shock the family. It is important for us to publish tuition fees and additional costs to illustrate the value of this educational opportunity. Please be encouraged to compare these costs to other boarding schools and discover the remarkable value of the New River Academy huge experience.
Let’s start from the beginning steps and move through each semester aspect.
An Easy Application Process: The application process is divided into two simplified phases.
Phase I Application; $150 (nonrefundable)
During Phase I you express an interest in New River Academy. We will research your academic needs, check references, and assess kayak abilities with the goal of issuing your NRA “acceptance letter.”
Enrollment Hint- Submitting a Phase I Application early gives families priority without being financially committed. If an “acceptance letter” is issued families are given a “grace period” that holds your space before the Phase II Application is due.
Phase II Application; $2,000 Deposit/semester (nonrefundable)
When you receive your “acceptance letter” you will also receive the Phase II Application. Legal documents such as waivers, medical forms, release of student records, and the alcohol and drug contract will be completed. When you submit the Phase II Application with your deposit, then you have officially secured your space with the New River Academy. Administration will order books, legally transfer transcripts, and provide you with travel instructions.
Educational Activity Fund
A $750 Educational Activity fund is required of each student. The balance is refunded at end of the semester or school year. Past activities have been multi-day rainforest trips, attending plays, exploring a volcano, public transportation fares, and visiting a serpentarium.
Saving Families Money
NRA negotiates educational and group discounts for international activities through purchasing as a group rather than individually.
International Flights: $1,000 to $2,000/international flight
A travel agent arranges group international flights according to your departure/arrival “choice airport.”
Saving Families Money and Time
A hired travel agent purchases group tickets and we all receive a group discount.
Domestic Flights to WV: Varies
Students are expected to arrive and depart from WV in August/October and April/May. Driving is an option. Some families in August will meet us at the Ottawa or en route to the Ottawa.
Semester Tuition Rates for 2012-2013
One semester- $19,800
Two semesters- $34,800
Saving Families Money
Costs of college prepatory boarding ski academies now average $35,000. When you consider that NRA efficiently moves an entire school including athletics you will see the value in comparison to top college prepatory boarding schools.
Pro-deal Equipment: New River Academy students receive pro-purchase industry rates. This saves students approximately 40% off retail rates and places students on a “professional industry” status. Some team equipment is annually required. Minimum equipment: kayak, kayak gear, paddle, gear bag, and expedition bag.
Saving Families Money and Time
Once the family has established their payment plan there are little costs left. Parents do not have to worry about car insurance, car costs, gas costs, accidents, feeding their child, party issues, and other teen concerns.
Text books: Approximately $150-$300
Spending Money:
We recommend establishing a check card for the student. Check cards allow the family to control the amount or establish a personal student budget. Students will want to shop for gifts, buy phone cards for calling home, pay for internet cafes, buy a churro (Chilean equivalent of funnel cake), go to a movie, or other tourist related expenses.
