Spring Semester 2013: "Yahoo! We're Going Back to Chile!"

Hunt Jennings surfs our base backyard play wave. Imagine it's February and your wearing a shorty, you're getting close to sticking your first McNasty, you walk up the Trancura bank to a view of Volcan Villarrica, and fresh bread and dinner are waiting for you in the quincho.  How cool is that?

"David the (New River Academy) base is going to give you more advantages than you can imagine,"

stated Cascade Raft and Kayak owner Tom Long five years ago.  Tom was right the advantages continue present themselves.  Since then New River Academy has built a fleet of over 50 kayaks, built the "domes away from home," developed cool Gypsy Wagons, a giant movie dome that serves as a warm class space, and a five shower bath house.  The base even extends infrastructure advantages to other kayak high schools.

Check out Jessica Droujko's, Canada National Champ, video about the New River Academy Pucon base.

New River Academy is proud to extend to you the luxuries of our Rio Trancura riverside base.  You’ll eat meals and have classes in either the quincho or the giant movie dome.  Plus, it’s super cool to walk down the backyard bank to a play hole, takeout for the Upper T, and put in for the Lower T.

Volcan Villarrica is the #1 reason tourist visit Pucon.  Enjoy this view each day you walk up the bank from the river.

"Pucon has become the world’s best kayak destination."

It’s a combination of the geology and the culture.  Pucon is at the northern tip of Patagonia in the Lakes District.  High annual precipitation provides flows off the Andes runs.  The roads are well developed due to geographical trading routes established in the 1800’s.  Now, the tourist town infrastructure provides ever-improving roads to classic runs like:  Upper and Lower Palguin, Upper and Lower Trancura, the Liucura training wave, the Upper and Lower Nevados, the Upper and Lower Fuy, LLancahue, and the San Pedro.  There are more we just don’t think your ready for those yet.

The Rio Fuy offers three sections on the Upper, Middle, and Lower Fuy.

What is the Carretera Austral?

Every kayaker traveling in Chile has pondered the logistics of moving from northern Chile to the Futaleafu in the heart of Patagonia.  The Carretera Austral is the sole highway (dirt) that almost connects northern Chile to Patagonia.  You’ll drive around the Gulf Ancud to Hornopiren, “Snow Oven.”  The snow oven provides excellent whitewater on Rios Negro and Blanco.  Just one valley south is Parque Pumalin.  Discover how philanthropist and deep ecologist Douglas Thompkins, founder the North Face, is conserving Patagonia’s free-flowing rivers.

Developing friendships with Chilenas like Daniella at the Futaleafu is priceless.  Daniella's family, the Mundacas, have a history that dates back to days when Butch Cassidy supposedly stayed on their land.

"Ahhhh… Yea!  It’s Futa Time!"

You’ll finish the Carretera Austral by ferry to Puerto Chaiten.  Drive past five hours of glaciers in Patagonia and you arrive to the Futa Valley.  Words cannot do it just but let’s try.  First, face book will be replaced with chasing chickens or telling stories around the fire.  Your food is grown in the valley and you can appreciate its richness.  Towering above your camp are jagged snow capped peaks and below are the clear blue waters of the Futa.  Bring a fishing rod if you like.

Five days a week for six hours per day you’ll still have class.  But now it may be on a picnic table or next to a fire.  Reading books will take the place of TV.  Now, your living and that is the whole reason Huge Experiences was created.

“And that has made all the difference.”

Your visit to Uganda will also include cultural exploration to villages and local schools. Geography, English, and science students will be excited to utilize the surroundings within their curriculum.

Fourth Quarter: United States and Canada’s Mini-Buseater and High Tension Waves:

Your final tour will bring you full circle back to West Virginia and the Ottawa River. This time you will be riding spring flows, giant waves, and waterfalls. Your fourth quarter begins on Georgia’s Tullulah Gorge, next traveling to North Carolina’s Green River and Tennessee’s Rock Island. Then it is a return to whitewater heaven in West Virginia. Surfing the New River Dries just 3 minutes from your home base is always exciting. Your final leg will be a trip north to the Ottawa’s famous Mini-Buseater and maybe even the Gatineau’s High Tension waves.

You will return to West Virginia for finals week, Advanced Placement exams, and graduation ceremonies.

Earning your diploma and walking the stage on the brow of the New River Gorge is a proud moment for both students and families. Contact us today for parent references or to learn more.
