Language Arts 9:
This course provides students with opportunities to improve and expand their skills in grammar, usage, vocabulary, composition, and literature. Both formal and informal writing are part of the curriculum.
In addition, students will learn to identify the elements of literature and compare and contrast the readings through various writing activities. Reading and written composition will be emphasized along with oral communication skills. Students will grow to recognize the interdependence of oral language, literature, and written language in a context of social and cultural expression.
American Literature/Composition:
This course will focus on the United States in the 20th and 21st century and it incorporates American studies, American literature, as well as current issues. The course will emphasize ideas and actions of those people who have shaped the world of the past and the present, and who will influence the world of the future. Students will examine the impact of these historical figures through their readings and compositions.
British Literature/Composition:
The literature in this course will include a historical survey of British writers from the Anglo-Saxon time to the present including Chaucer, Shakespeare, Wilde, and Orwell. Students will examine the meaning of this literature through composition and discussion. The course especially emphasizes the improvement of critical thinking, expository and persuasive writing, and reading critically.
World Literature/Composition:
This course will examine a range of literary and artistic expression from ancient times to the present from countries outside common American culture. The class emphasizes basic philosophies associated with various cultures and time periods to enable an understanding and appreciation of ideas and beliefs different from our own.
European Literature:
(Available during summer school or by special arrangement) This course presents the progression of themes from various literary periods during the development of Western and Eastern Europe. Works will be covered from ancient to modern times, with a focus on the Renaissance, Middle Ages, Romanticism, Realism, Victorian literature, and contemporary works.
