The Clean Blunt (Instructional)

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Hey Everyone!

I am here with a quik instructional on how to Clean Blunt. For those of you who have mastered the blunt and are looking for another move to work on, you are at the right place. Also, lucky for us, I was told the clean blunt is easier than the blunt once learned. I agree with that Statement.

Clean Blunt: A blunt done without ever touching your paddle throughout the entire trick.

Here is the step by step progression

1: You need to set up high on the wave, people do this in many ways. I like to carve side to side and slow myself down there fore you rise to the top of the wave.

2: As you feel yourself begin to fall down the wave again edge your boat as if you are going to do a normal blunt. The key here is to make sure you are holding your paddle up out of the water. Some people even hold it over their heads.

3: When you feel you bow start to rise off the water you have to throw your body forward and upstream. This Crunching and  Momentum will be what begins to rotate your boat.(you still need to have your hands in the air! Keep that paddle up off the water) A small thing that will help is to crunch the muscles on the side that will be most upstream, or in other words the side that you edged on in the first place. Also throw your paddle and your hands upstream, this will keep them off the water and keep your trick clean!

4: For the rest of the move you want to still be focused on keeping your body crunched forward for the landing. Keeping crunched will keep your stern from pearling when you land.

Good Luck!!!

The Start of Something Huge…

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Hey Everyone!

New River Academy is full of young rippers who are always going HUGE. But a lot of the time the footage of the huge moves doesn’t make it to your eyes. I’ve had an idea for a while to solve this problem for a while and now I am finally putting it into action. Every Day I will be posting up a clip of the biggest move thrown that day in Raw Un Editted form, just the way we saw it. We have had Suprise for the past two days in a row so we have a few extra tricks as the kick off to this new idea.

The First is a PAn Am from yours Truly. The funny thing about it was that it stalled out half way through. Let me know what you think. The Resolution isn’t the best but we’ll be fixing that soon!

First NRA Blog

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Hi Everyone,

My name is Alex Shallhorn and I am currently a student at New River Academy. This semester I decided to join NRA for the trip to Chile, and the great freestyle training in Canada, and the United States. Chile was an amazing trip, and improved my creaking and river running skills incredibly. This quarter the main focus is freestyle training and big waves, like Bus Eater. We are leaving for Canada at four in the morning tomorrow. I am very excited to get back to my home river, the Ottawa. Also this weekend we will be attending the level six cup, which is a very fun competition located in the heart of Ottawa City. I am a student of the video class, taught by Tino Specht, and will be uploading videos as the quarter goes along.

Hi, my name is Keegan Grady. I am attending New River Academy with the support of Lunch Video Magazine and their LVM Video Scholarship.  I am stoked to return to Canada and my home river, the Ottawa, this weekend for the Level Six Capital Cup in Ottawa, Ontario. It’s a great competition that I have attended every year for the past five years, it’s a fun little feature where almost every trick can be thrown. For more info on the feature google, cityofottawawhitewater.

Billy Harris Coaches New River Academy in Rock Island, TN!

Billy Harris

Billy Harris

Are you familiar with the newspaper cartoon “Family Circus?” It’s infamous for always featuring the same story: a little kid running around with a dotted trail trailing him, showing his path of destruction all over thouse and yard.  Well, if you were to follow the path of New River Academy in the past two weeks, our dotted line would be all over the South East, looping around and dividing to ensure the athletes are getting access the best of spring flows. Our dotted line would show us hopping from river to river, to Mojo Burrito in Chattanooga, to play wave, to ice cream at the Sky Lake General, to river, to the movies (Haunting in Connecticut), to river to river…

Already, we have had the opportunity to run the New River Gorge in West Virginia, the Tallulah Gorge in Georgia, the Ocoee River in Tennessee and the Green river in North Carolina. In addition, we’ve been able to put in some serious freestyle training at Upper Railroad on the New and Brave Wave at Rock Island.

The highlight of the trip so far has been the guest coaching of Billy Harris. Billy is, among many things, a veteran freestyle competitor and Canadian National Champion, regarded by many as the best freestyle coach in the world.

Now, I can certainly attest that our athletes regard him as one of the best coaches they have ever experienced. I gleaned this from such conversations as the following, which I overheard while driving with some of the students to the Jackson Kayak factory for a tour:

Alex Shallhorn:
Wow, Billy Harris is the best coach I’ve ever had.
Keegan Grady: I think he’s the best coach on the planet.
Alex Shallhorn: Definitely the best coach in the world. I’m getting so much better!

As I’m writing this email, Isaac Holden is sitting not far from me on the couch. As I type, we’re discussing Billy Harris and he said, “Tell the parents in your email I said he was the best coach ever!”
“Well,” I told Isaac, “I would, but Keegan already said he was the best coach on the planet, which is more quotable, so I think I’m going to write that.”
“In that case,” Isaac shot back, “I say he’s the best coach in the….galaxy!”
“Within a nine planet radius!” shouted someone from the kitchen.

….and you see how it goes. In all seriousness, Billy did amazing things for our students in only a few days. Before joining the group, he met discussed each student at length with David Hughes and Tino Specht, documenting their individual skills and needs. He provided one-on-one coaching at Brave Wave, followed by one-on-one follow-up meetings with the students to discuss training, moves, upcoming competitions, routines, diet and cross-training. For two evenings in a row he gave presentations, each about two hours in length. I listened in on these talks and was tremendously impressed. He focused on the often-overlooked mental element of training and competing, and how self support and confidence will gain you the ultimate advantage over your competitors. Everyone- students and staff- sat in rapt attention throughout. Billy also stressed the need to support one another, on the wave, in the eddy and off the water. His main point was that supporting those you travel and train with will eventually transform you into a confident, positive and successful athlete.

Although the talk was specific to whitewater freestyle, there were so many broader life lessons to be learned from Billy’s talk. It was exciting to listen to, and to observe everyone absorb his words so thoroughly.  After his talk, Billy remained with the students until ten o’clock, answering individual questions and explaining exactly how judging and scoring worked.

Needless to say, with the influence and inspiration of Billy’s coaching fresh in their minds, the ambition and enthusiasm for training was edged up a few palpable notches. More and more of the students elected to wake up at dawn to get an early morning play session in, tugging on dry suits even before their eyes were completely open. At the end of their session, they were rewarded with thermoses of hot chocolate at the take-out.As a teacher, I am a huge fan of these optional dawn-patrol sessions, because the students who have participated are alert, wide awake and cheerful in class.

Signs, Color, and Texture of Pichilemu

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

This was a project that the New River Academy photography class did while in the sunny beach town of Pichilemu, Chile. The project required us to take photos of bright colorful signs or posters throughout the city. Also, we were told to take texture photos, that make you want to reach out and touch the object in the picture. Here are the photos that I took:

Kayaking the Southeast Whitewater

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

We are well into fourth quarter here at New River Academy, and things are going great. The quarter started off with an awesome trip to the Tallulah Gorge which runs only a couple times a year. The Tallulah is a class IV creek with really fun rapids. Oceana is the big thing on the Tallulah. It is a 100 foot slide with a small boof at the top, a huge 15 foot rooster tail 3/4 of the way down, and a shallow sticky hole at the bottom. It looks really intimidating, and at first glance, all I thought was no way. Of course I ran it though, and the adrenaline rush and release after was ridiculous. I was shaking. It was so awesome.

Next New River took on Brave wave in Rock Island Tennessee. The wave was super fun, and students and teachers alike were throwing huge. It was great training for Team Trials, which many of us students are trying out for late May. While at Brave Wave, the famous Billy Harris came in as a guest coach for a week. He was an amazing coach and helped everyone with their moves. It was a cool experience to get to learn from one of the best kayakers in the world in a one on one type setting.

After Rock Island, Students had the choice of going back to the Tallulah, or going to the Ocoee. I chose to go to the Ocoee. The Ocoee river in Tennessee is a super fun play run. Isaac Holden and Jason Aytes both knew the run well, and showed the rest of us all the cool secret playspots. There were so many different lines you could take on all the rapids, the river never got boring.

The next week, a few of the students went to the Green River, but most of us went back to West Virginia. There we ran the New River Gorge, which is probably my favorite run ever. It is not hard, but there is so much play, and lots of big fun wave trains. We have been running the gorge every day basically, and I still look forward to it tomorrow.

School is going great, the kayaking has been amazing, and everyone seems happy. We leave for Canada thursday morning, so, I’ll have more to write about soon! (MINI BUS!!!)

North Towards Mexico

Kayaking is a serious sport, no smiles aloud. These little boys are all serious about their first shuttle down to the beach in Choshuenco.

It is two days before Valentine’s day, and here in Pucon the evening is threatening to be as hot as the day was as hot as the day was. Today we left Choshuenco in a blaze of glory and dust, color and kayaks. Someone wrote in the dust with their finger on the tailgate of the truck: HONK IF YOU LOVE KAYAKIN and we waited and waited for a honk….never heard it. Didn’t really pass to many people on the potholed, washboard roads between Choshuenco and Pucon.  Travel days are always a good time for our traveling carnival: singing, talking, five minute ice cream breaks, new towns, and the light but blissful sleep brought on by leaning your head against the window of a van bumping down a road that’s heading North, towards Mexico.  For more cool photos from Choshuenco, Chile visit our Flickr account.
