Hey, Dan here checking in from from the Patagonia Gap Year program. Glad to finally be here in the heart of Chile with a great group of kayakers. I learned to kayak near my home town in Massachusetts from the many friends and staff at Zoar Outdoor. Ever since then I have been pursuing my paddling career all over the Eastern US and Canada, and now Chile.

    Adventures in Pucon

    Thursday, March 17th, 2011

In the last couple days here in Pucon, Chile we have been learning and exploring Volcan Villarica. It has been pretty rainy and cold recently so we had to brainstorm ideas for activities we could do around the area since the rivers aren’t up. We came up with taking a cave tour at the base of the Volcan. For a couple bucks you can be guided through the most recent underground lava flow tunnels. Before the tour they instruct you on the history and science behind chilean volcanoes and Volcan Villarica. We discovered that there are more than 5000 volcanoes in Chile and that Chile is the 2nd most active site of volcanoes in the world.

The next day Tamara and I along with a couple staying at the Pucon Kayak Hostel ascended the volcano after looking up at it for so long. We went with a local tour agency in town that outfitted us with all the gear we needed including pants, crampons, mittens, helmet, and an ice axe. We had an amazing break in the weather allowing us to experience some great views although you can only hang out on the top for a couple minutes before the toxic sulfur gets into your lungs making it hard to breathe. We then slid most of the way down the volcano using our ice picks as brakes. The hike us took just about all day making us pretty exhausted by the end of it all.

    Maipo Valley Work Experience

    Monday, February 7th, 2011

Hola from Chile! Our group of five just arrived here in Pichelemu after an awesome and eye-opening week in the Maipo valley. We had the opportunity to stay at Cascada de las Animas (a family owned adventure resort), and best of all get some work experience. During our stay we got into a raft guide lifestyle that included safety boating on the lower Rio Maipo. Since I had raft guide experience from the past summer it made me feel right at home. Our duties were to show up at 9 AM which turned into an extra little nap before things started to move around 10 o clock. We would help move rafts and shuttle them to the river, get equipment ready for the guests, and get our own kayaks and gear ready to go. We were lucky enough to work with two fellows from West Virginia that were down raft-guiding for the month to make enough money to head south to the dreamy Futalefu. The more english-speaking lads the better. We did two trips a day for three days which turned out to be quite exhausting. We were provided with three meals a day which were subtracted from our pay. At the end we walked away with some work abroad experience and enough pesos to last a couple days!
