Student report
New River Academy helped out Kara Ware with her Earth Day celebration in Fayetteville, West Virginia, also where the school base is located. The group of us woke up early and headed to downtown to see what we could do to help. We all helped set up tables, tarps, tents and unloaded peoples cars. It was great to see so many people helping out the environment, they even had a rock climbing wall brought in by the air force. I do have to say the inflatable were everyone’s favorite’s. It was a great cause that Kara has helped set up. Kara is such a great person she has her own yoga place, helps with the community and we are lucky to have her apart of the New River Academy team. The crowd was pretty big, with hula hoops being thrown around and music blasting for everyone to hear. Well after earth day we only had a couple more days in WV before we headed to Canada so we could all compete in the Level Six Capital Cup in Ottawa city. Everyone did great NRA creamed the competition with Keegan Grady a senior at New River Academy placing first in the junior men’s category and Jason Craig placing fourth in the pro men’s category going up against Billy Harris, Joel Kowalski and many other tough competitors and the girls doing extremely well also. It was a great warm sunshiny day. And now we await to see what the Ottawa river has to bring to us.

The 8th annual Level Six capital cup was this past weekend in Ottawa city. It was a warm sunny day and the competition was fierce. Tents were set up and it was a day of fun starting in the early morning with the competitors meeting.
The open women started out the event with the top 3 paddlers including Melanie Gravel, Sandra Kiviaho, and our very own Julia Fisher. All of the women did great some of them it was their first competition ever. The judges were also top notch and included Billy Harris, Keegan Grady, Kalob Grady along with others. The women did great. Up next was the Pro Junior girls which included three New River Academy ladies Alex Shallhorn, Palmer Miller, Tracy D’Arbeloff, and precious student Katie Kowalski.
The
It was a tough competition all of these girls are very good friends and were nailing moves. Blunts and roundhouses were their game. Katie Kowaski dominated the junior girls category with Alex Shallhorn in a close second. The competition was really kicking off now with the red bull tent and all of the visitors hopefully some of them will get into paddling. The junior men was a big category with eleven competitors. The New River Academy boys defiantly brought their stuff to the table crushing the competition. Issaac Holden, Josh Mills, and Keegan Grady made it into the finals with Keegan sweeping up the competition with a score of 106. His little brother Kalob Grady missed out on finals by a couple of tricks. The Men’s category was huge with twenty-nine competitors, with three heats. Four New River guys were bringing the fire and fear to the other competitors eyes. Jason Craig got into to finals and placed fourth.
Jason is only 15 and was up against men who were a lot older then him. The top three paddlers were Dave Nieuwenhuis, Billy Harris, and Joel Kowalski, who is the new level six capital cup champion.
The day was full of fun festivities with a BBQ and tents from local paddling clubs. The Nepean high school was nice enough to volunteer and help out the event. Tyler Lawlor did a great job hosting the event. Hopefully New River Academy can be back for the 9th annual Level Six Capital Cup.

BEAT to your own rhythm
Beat by beat, and symbol by symbol,
smashing through your head,
bleeding through your bones,
rambling through your voice, and jumping out your toes,
let it slide across floor of wood slate and brick,
it runs out runs out and out, further out then ever before,
breathe it in, let it bloom,
colors vibrant as the veins that course under your skin of heavenly descent,
pouring out through cracks holes and splinters,
bursting through skin, sliding amongst teeth, lips, and you, and me,
smiles and handshakes, greetings and goodbyes,
kisses of charity, those of lust, beauty, love and all in between,
manners of shimmers upon hands,
grazes, grips, and grasps, gasps of life and the love we lead,
opposites run amidst those that fly,
those that crawl, and the others that swim
among waves of crashing, flowing, and dripping,
watch the ocean float by in a bath tub
and a hurricane hit you in a shower
watch mist gleam on silk skin, and silvery mirrors,
watch it breath against your own breath,
watch it burn away the chill, watch it rip through cold and sad,
let it wash amongst your tears, let soap bubbles float along,
let them pop and fizzle, falling out as you will one day do,
only wish for it to not come to soon, wish as i do,
for it shall not come as soon as you will think,
grays and blacks will fight there way into you,
see in color, block them out, rage through life in a beautiful grace
step your step in the way you wish to step,
dance your dance to your own music,
sing your song to your own tune,
let the words flow between your teeth,
let them gleam in the light of day, let that moment be yours,
one and only, never again shall it come as they wish,
it will be yours, as mine will be mine,
one day, you and i, shall write a song to our own tune,
and dance a dance with our own steps,
our own beats and measures,
one day you and i will have a moment that is simply ours,
until that day, dance your dance, and sing your song, live your life,
scream out against all those that would speak against you.

This picture is of the bridge over the New River in West Virgina. I took this picture when photo class had a field trip to place in West Virgina. This picture is taken at a 25 shutter speed. It has an aperture of 4. The focal length is 55mm, and the ISO is 200.
Kayaking is a serious sport, no smiles aloud. These little boys are all serious about their first shuttle down to the beach in Choshuenco.
It is two days before Valentine’s day, and here in Pucon the evening is threatening to be as hot as the day was as hot as the day was. Today we left Choshuenco in a blaze of glory and dust, color and kayaks. Someone wrote in the dust with their finger on the tailgate of the truck: HONK IF YOU LOVE KAYAKIN and we waited and waited for a honk….never heard it. Didn’t really pass to many people on the potholed, washboard roads between Choshuenco and Pucon. Travel days are always a good time for our traveling carnival: singing, talking, five minute ice cream breaks, new towns, and the light but blissful sleep brought on by leaning your head against the window of a van bumping down a road that’s heading North, towards Mexico.
Melina Coogan keeps Literature bright fresh and happening at New River Academy. In return for the gift of knowledge she bestows upon them daily, her students are tranforming her into a river running, boof hitting, mad loop sticking rodeo rockstar.

Melina Coogan, the new english teacher at New River Academy, happens to be one of the best Ultimate Frisbee players i have ever seen and she loves teaching new throws and plays to them team. I myself am not the best ultimate player but within a couple of games i was making cuts and passing the disc, with the help of Melina teaching me my backhand. I even got to try pulling the disc, which means throwing it off kinda like in football how the team punts to the other team to start the play. Morning workouts are becoming so much more fun because every running day we jog to the field to get a quick game in. Ultimate i have found is one of the best workouts ever and it is great seeing everyone playing together and surrportive of the players that are just learning the game.

Week one in Chile
We arrived to Chile in awe of the natural beauty. There were mountains everywhere and everything was so colorful and pretty. We got to the base in Pucon and everyone was stoked to see one another and meet our three new teachers Julia Fisher, Melina Coogan, and Matias Nunez. We quickly got settled and had a safety clinic by the play hole on the Trancora River. We paddled and played happy to be once again with New River Academy. David Hughes mentor group took everyone on a trip to the Tres Altos. The Tres Altos are a series of waterfalls where we climbed down to a 15 foot slide with about a 12 foot drop off, let’s just say I was scared sliding down something on my butt then flying off not exactly something I jump at the opportunity to do, but with the help of a pirate floaty I slowly urged myself to the edge and the water took me down and fast, with a smile on my face I popped up on the bottom.
Soon after that we all crammed into the van and took off to Choshuenco with stopping on the San Pedro River. The San Pedro is a beautiful run about 7 or 8 miles with crystal clear warm water. The river gets its water from one of Chiles HUGE lakes so the water is solar heated. The rapids were so much fun, wave trains galore with two class 4 big water rapids. The cool thing about the San Pedro is that when you flip you can see the river bed passing underneath you it got me quite dizzy looking down at it, but the sun was shining and the water glistened, everything was just so pretty with the mountains and the clouds in the background.

We are now in the small town of Choshuenco, and when I say small I really mean small it has two dirt roads in it, but the people here are so nice and it is gorgeous even in the pouring rain.
