Wildwater Roots Film Premier & The Dries…

    Saturday, April 9th, 2011

Incredible, Outstanding, Superior, Unique, Epic.  All these adjectives are words used to describes the New River Dries when they come out of hiding and become not so dry.  These waves that come in when it pours and pours in North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.  The water comes up, the waves come in and the air miles reward points are given away.  We got the chance to surf the rare waves at its near lowest levels which offered up a steep, fast and retentive 1st wave and a trashy, but steep 3rd wave.  With warmer water than at home, with equally awesome waves.  The last couple days were defiantly a unique experience for the group.  Learning new tricks, perfecting old ones and going bigger that big.  This was defiantly a great set of waves to become comfortable with big waves and learning the new style that comes with them.   Air screws, helix’s, flip turns and clean blunts were all common tricks being thrown down by students and locals.

The New River Gorge in itself is an unbelievable river, being the second oldest river on earth, it has been carving its way through the gorge for millions and millions of years.  Smooth, boulder sized rocks cover the banks, with nice class 3-4 whitewater the entire way along.  The common view of fresh water springs falling out of the mountainside and green trees lining the whole way to the top, it is truly a beautiful place.  The Dries section of the Gorge is equally as unique and spectacular.  Only runnable when the rain comes down and the river goes up.  It flows constantly for about 5 miles with several spots for sweet play and shows off the great river running that the New has too offer.

The Wild-water Roots tour, headed off by Forge Motion Pictures, a Anson Fogal company, Set Brian”B-real’ Ward off across the country premiering the film “Wildwater”  as well as many other smaller videos such as the Bank Mags videos about the Northwest.  The film offers many big runs, featuring an extremely high water run of the North fork Payette.  However, behind this great kayaking film, there was a a story being told, a story about kayakers and what it means to us, how the wild and free flowing rivers are the soul thing pushing us to get back to the roots and rivers of the world as often and for as long as possible.  Kayakers as a community need the rivers of our earth to stay thriving and motivated and happy and free.  With the whole word populated to almost bursting, everyone needs the excuse that kayaking is the leave the big city and head out into the wilderness and be free, to live your life, to defy ordinary.

    Home Sweet Home

    Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

“Home Sweet Home”   I have never been gone from home long enough to appreciate the value behind that saying.  After 7 weeks on the foreign continent of Africa.  This past week at home has been an eye opener at how we as North Americans live and how lucky we are to be this way.  That aside, after 7 weeks in Africa, the need for small necessities of life starts to overpower your thoughts.  Such as paved roads, safe cars and vegetables served in more ways that just veggie goop.  Back home for a little over a week now, and all these things back to normal.  I would trade them all in right away if I had a chance to go back in a Heart Beat!

    defy ordinary,

                           Kalob

    Eden Rock & SilverBack

    Thursday, February 24th, 2011

    p { margin-bottom: 0.21cm; }

We have been at Eden Rock for just over a week now.  Being at a new destination, closer to civilization, we have experienced a whole new side of the African lifestyle. Being close to the small town of Bujagali Falls, I have learned of the day to day life of Ugandans and there small village lifestyle. I feel like it just a big team, everyone is there to help out if needed.

We have spent the last week making memories and soaking in the SilverBack section of the White Nile. This section on the Nile as of February 28th, will no longer be a destination for big water kayakers. The plan that will go ahead is to build a massive Hydro Electric Dam right across the top of the Rapids SilverBack and HeadBangers. The whole White Nile flows through these 2 narrow slotsy that drops naturally almost 20 feet. The Dam that is nearly a Kilometre long before reaching the shoreline will have a unimaginable impact on the lifestyles of everyone who lives near. Too close and your property will be flooded. This massive river that drops over 100 feet in this short 4 km section. It is devastating that in four days. The final stages will begin to make this section one big lake. The worst part of this entire thing might be the fact that the power generated by this dam is not for the power deprived Uganda, but will be shipped via power lines to other countries such as neighbouring Kenya and as far away as China.

Besides the overhanging feeling of despair for this Great River. We have made the most of these last days on this pristine piece of whitewater. Running different lines, challenging each other and holding down river freestyle competitions. Running the river in sunshine, or as the last couple days had it, with huge black clouds roaring overhead with bolts of lightning flashing in the distance. The next three days with be embedded in my mind forever as I will always remember: The Hump, Bujagali Falls, 50/50, WidowMaker, HeadBangers and SilverBack!

Although I have spent the last week thinking about this amazing section of Whitewater. School is still going well, despite receiving an 85% to end my 6 consecutive 100%+ grades. It is a much better system to hold classes outside in the shade or playing frisbee, than in a closed in classroom.

Other highlights from this week include receiving both the “What Can I Do” award and the “Huge Move” Award at our weekly mentor meetings. Buying the best Chapatti’s ever from the Bujagali Chapatti Company and visiting a local restaurant for an evening of local foods, local music and local dancing.

28 days later, Everything in Uganda is still perfect!

    defy ordinary,

    Kalob

    Black Session–White Nile… Special

    Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

Lifetime Memories for some people include Picnics with their family on the hilltop, or going to your first concert.   My most recent experience is defiantly going down as a lifetime memory.  Last night, A group of paddlers including myself set out on a nighttime adventure of a lifetime.  We went to face the infamous Nile Special… In the Dark.  It wasn’t the tricks we were throwing, or the wave itself that made it an experience of a lifetime.  It was the people I was with and the feeling of doing something that few have done before  you.

This past week has defiantly taken top prize so far in Africa.  Starting off the week by going to a Ugandan High School and facing off against there Football team (Soccer), and coming away with a 1-0 victory.  Hanging out with school kids and playing some ball was just the start of the day,  we continued on to stroll through a local village and take boda boda’s back to the river side and went for a swim.   On Monday, for a mentor activity, one of the groups bought a pig for the school to eat to make up for the mainly vegetarian meals on the island.  Cooking and eating the meat were 2 very satisfying activities that raised everyone’s moral.  Yesterday was the best day of them all.  As our last full day on the Hairy Lemon for nearly 3 weeks.  It was a day to take in and make memories, and that is just what we did.  Starting off the night with some music and quickly moving towards playing some Disk in the dark.  After nearly 2 hours of waiting, we got the signal and it was time to head to the river.  Quickly and quietly we moved and we were on the river in no time.  The session was not made because of the tricks or the wave.  Just the people I was with and the feeling of living life to the fullest made it an incredible experience.

As it turns out, kayaking is a way better motivation to do school work and study than the threat of being grounded.  With 100% on my first 3 tests, I’s say any class in the “chill spot” is better than any class back home.  The style of school these first few weeks is awesome. Switching between Club Wave and Special everyday.  Classes are a decent compromise for the opportunity the paddle on these world class waves everyday that seem to only get better.

The kayaking here is just as good, or even better than when we first arrived.  With certain moves locked down, I have moved towards combo moves.  My newest challenge being that of the Spin-Air-screw.  Lets just say, if at first you don’t succeed, try and try and try and try… again.

I dont think this life can ever get old.

    defy ordinary,

    Kalob

    Oh AFRICA…

    Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

Ice Cream!  For the first time in 3 weeks, I am indulging in a delicious Vanilla milkshake!  Africa has been amazing!!!  I am glad to say that most of my pre conceived notions are not what I thought.  For one, last week, we had a hail storm in the streets of Jinja, solid marble sized peices of ice falling from the ski over the small African city.  The temperature here is a notion that has held to.  It is hot.  Nothing else to say about it.  Its just HOT!

The While Nile is still proving to be one of the best rivers ever for big water conessuirs.  Nile Special and Club Wave are still proving to themselves as large, Go huge waves perfect for any trick you want to throw.   Yesterday, we went 2 hours upstream for a training session at the (not so) Super Hole.  Super Hole is a deep, retentive hole perfect for Worlds training.   After a long and satisfiing session in Super, we floated down stream to the infamous Hypoxia and Itunda Falls.  This Monster rapid includes holes bigger than I thought possible!  The 1/2 mile lomng rapid is filled with death hole after death hole.  A run in with locals prevented us with scouting the rapid in full.  The though of running such a big rapid is exiting, but unfortunatly, this might not be the trip for it…  The rest of the Day 2 Section is filled with great rapids with huge rolling wave trains and countless islands.  The volume of the river is just Crazy.  There is so much water, it flows in every direction while swirling and surging around islands.  With the countless channels and huge water, this is definatly a River you can’t finish in one trip.

The food here is great, With fresh fruit every morning, to awsome homemade meals for lunch and dinner.  It is truly the most healthy any one could live.

School is great.  For some reason, class just go by quicker with red tail monkeys swinging in the trees, or the sound of rushing white water.   With a full schedule of classes, kayaking is the best reward for when classes are done.  And with internet once a week, living without facebook isnt as bad as I thought it would be…

    defy ordinary,

    Kalob

    The Hairy Lemon

    Monday, January 31st, 2011

    p { margin-bottom: 0.21cm; }

Uganda is AMAZING! We have spent that last couple days getting used to our new home on the Hairy Lemon. The Hairy Lemon is a small island based in the middle of the Nile River near the head waters of Lake Victoria. The island is secluded, beautiful and wild. The island hosts many animal such as a band of red tail monkeys, a group of chickens, countless birds and a large 6 ft. Montador Lizard. The weather is always sunny with cloudless skies and Hot! I can proudly say I have eaten everything that has been placed in front of me. It is unreal!

Yesterday we started our new semester of school, might be the best thing ever. After a chill chemistry class, I had a nap on a beach and played a game of water volleyball during my double spare. A great pre-cal class followed by double video and finished the day off with Physics all leads to the best of every day… Nile Special!

The kayaking here could possibly be the best place for any big water connoisseur. A 5 minute paddle up steam leads us to the most constant big wave on Earth. Nile Special is a fast, steep and dynamic big wave. Standing 8 feet tall, top to bottom, any wave trick is possible, and not only possible but the potential for air is ridiculous. And Special is only the first wave of the rapid; following it are 2 equally great waves including Club Wave. A big, wide wave that is great for learning new moves.

Today we are heading into Jinja, Uganda. A small city situated along Lake Victoria, todays mission to the city includes things such as: the exchange of money into local shillings, to charge our electronic devices, purchase supplies top create a solar power station, and for Team Canada here in Africa, find and buy the best souvenir possible, most likely, Machetes!

    defy ordinary,

    Kalob

    Sun Set from 36 000…

    Friday, January 28th, 2011

         Oh Africa!

After a rough start to the journey due to weather conditions and the small issue of a cancelled flight.  I have made it to Africa! Four lay overs later I arrived feeling tired, hungry and most importantly, with all my luggage.  I took my first step onto a new continent and man it felt… warm?   The temperature here is warmer at 30 000 feet than it is at sea level back home.  So, here I am at the Backpackers Hostel just outside of Kampala Uganda jsut about to dig into a 4000 dollar Rolex(pancake and eggs wrapped in a soft tortila shell)!  Tomorrow will be interesting as I travel around the city with Smink finishing up some things as we wait for the rest of the school that is delayed in Washington.  Can’t wait to see everyone tomorrow! Until the next adventure!

    defy ordinary,

                           Kalob Grady

    p.s.  $200 000 Uganda shillings is only equivelent to $100 Canadian…

    White Winter — White Nile

    Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

As I sit here writing this, I am wrapped in a blanket and chillin beside a heater due to the numbing temperature of -31 C outside.  However, in 2 days, I won’t have to worry about these frigid nights.  Quite the opposite actually, I’ll probably be having a little afternoon nap in the hot African sun.  2 days away now from the trip of a lifetime, I will be Spending the next 6 weeks travelling around Uganda and paddling on the imfamous White Nile and embarking on a week long safari!  This whole time I will be gaining school credits and training for the World Championships with some of the best teachers and coaches in the world.  All packed and ready to go, I have never been this exited in my life.  Add the fact that I haven’t paddling in a month and a half just adds to the exitment to be 2 days away from the largerst river on Earth!  Until the next adventure!

    defy ordinary,
