When in Chile the gappers where lucky enough to paddle the on the Rio Claro before it dried up due to a huge hole opening up due the earthquakes. This is a video of us paddling the Entre slatos and the Siete Tazas.

Fun on the Futa

The school was at the Rio Futaleufu the past week or so. When we were there the Futa Fest was on and the NRA students did incredibly well, with Eric Bartl coming 2nd out of the playboat division down river race and David Gorski, Lorenzo (spanish teacher) and Stephen Forster coming 4th,5th and 6th. The Rafting team with Andy, Matt Smink, David Gorski, Lorenzo, Stephen and Tino came 1st beating a pro Peruvian rafting team. This video has some footage of the playboat comp and just us having fun. The Great Caperucita Roja Puppet Show

For the past few weeks my spanish class, spanish III, have been working on a puppet show called Caperucita Roja (Little Red Ridding Hood) This was a great way to learn spanish and was great fun. You can watch the full show in the video below!!

I haven’t been able to kayak due to a small accident, but I have still had fun and learnt a lot by hanging out with the locals. They have been very kind and helpful and have allowed me to help out in the kitchen, chopping potatoes, washing dishes and learning Spanish. I have been using all the Spanish I know with a lot of hand signals to fill in the gaps. I have also been taught some new words, for example, “cortar” is to cut. I really enjoyed working in the kitchen as a cultural experience, but I can’t wait to get back in a boat today!

Kayaking so far!!!

So far i have paddle two rivers, the Rio Miapo and the Rio Claro (clear river) and some in the sea. The Rio Miapo was a high volume river (similar to the Tay) that is a grade 3/4. It was a good river for playboating and also just for a nice river trip. I did two sections of the Rio Claro the The Entre Saltos and The Siete Tazas. The Entre Saltos was a grade 4 section with some small but technical drops with a 15ft waterfall at the end. The Siete Tazas (The Seven Teacups) was my favourite as it was a series of seven big, but very clean waterfalls into big pools. The last two waterfalls are the biggest with a height of about 20ft. The Siete Tazas was a great place to practice boofing and tucking off of waterfalls.

I am currently in Pichilemu which is a beach town with some pretty ace waves to surf. I am enjoying learning how to surf these waves and hope to learn a basic trick or two.

My first Chile experience

Well i made it to Chile in one piece and met david and katie for the first time at the baggage claim area. Soon after i saw the familiar face of Matt Smink and he introduced us to our super cool spanish teacher Lorenzo. We all then hopped into the truck and drove off only to run into our first problem of the trip as the radiator pipe burst. After we used the magical powers of duck tape to repair this we headed of to our home for the next four days at San Alfonso. Our home is right next to the river maipo which has two sections the upper and lower. The upper is grade 4/5 and the lower is grade three. There is also an adventure resort called Cascada de las Animas (Waterfalls of the Spirits) where there is a bar, restaurant and campsite where we will be spending tomorrow night.
