Safety Training (Throw Rope and Signals)

    Sunday, September 12th, 2010

    Hey Everyone,

Checking in with some photos from another safety training session with New River Academy! We worked on river signals and throw rope rethrow practice. Enjoy the photos!

    Coach Tino Specht

Tino and Lorenzo demonstrate the correct river signals to use. These river signals are universal and can be used outside the program so when all our athletes head out into the big world of paddling they will have a high level of understanding and communication on the river!

Lorenzo talk about how to tell the line on a rapid in river signal language.

Tino talking about where to point on the river. Never point to a hazard!

    Emergency!

New River Academy Students Win Level Six Prizes

    Thursday, September 9th, 2010

    Hey Everyone,

I’m writing in here to let everyone know about a great program booster we have. Level Six the prestigious Whitewater,Street, and Surf Clothing company donates some hats and stickers as prizes for NRA competitions! I have been paddling for Level Six since I was 19 and I swear by them. Everyone will tell you now a days that everything I wear is Level Six,haha. Well we had our first winners this week!

The first was Alex Anderson! I set a goal that if anybody could make all of the eddies and then surf the wave while holding onto the wall in Colosseum on the Ottawa River they would get a prize. Alex Nailed every move and came out smiling knowing he had attained his goal. Great Job Alex!

Alex with his new Level Six Hat and sticker!

The Second was Errik Hill this morning! We had a race to see who could throw a throw bag, recoil, and then throw and hit their target again the fastest and most accurate. We do this during morning workout because safety is first priority here at New River Academy and we loooovvveee to practice it whenever we get the chance. . Errik placed first with a blazing time of 13 seconds! Congrats Errik!!!!

Errik with his new hat and Sticker! What a safe guy!

    Way to go Guys!

Errik and Alex stoked to get some new lids and stickers!

    Hit Your Line Wednesday!!!!!!!

    Thursday, September 9th, 2010

    Hello World,

Check out some of the photos of hit your line Wednesday. We reserve this day to work on our river running skills and pushing ourselves in the understanding of how the river works and how to scout and run the rapids safely! This builds good habits for the river later in life.

    Enjoy!

    Coach Tino Specht

Kira setting a great example walking up to the boats with her throw rope in hand. We have a rule here at NRA that whenever you are out of your kayak scouting or walking along the shore line you must have your throw rope in your hand. If not then you get to do 25 pushups.

Zoe Ross all smiles on Hit Your Line Wednesday

Hayley and Julia excited to go for a challenging line on Garberator rapid at the Lorn

Under the watchful experienced eye of Lorenzo

Taylor, Jason, and Mackenzie ready to show the line to the rest of the group!

Kaleb Grady decided to paddle with us yesterday and show us his hometown spots
