Hi, my name is Zoe Ross. I am fifteen years old and am from Athens, Tennessee. During June, 2009 I was introduced to Jeff West at Ace Ocoee Funyaks where I discovered my passion for whitewater kayaking. That summer I spent almost everyday on the nearby Ocoee and Tellico Rivers. At New River Academy I kayak, study, and travel around the world.

    Rio Blanco

    Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Drive east from Horno Piren. Turn left before river; there are several locked gates, but if you ask around town you can find someone that has the keys. Continue driving down a dirt/gravel road until you reach a cow field and a wide place in the road where there is a house and room to park. Walk straight through the field and you can find a trail. The hike to get to the river is long and sketchy, but the river is worth it. The nature of the river is pool drop, friendly, and has many different line options. Coming down the last rapid you will see a bridge; eddy out because this is the take out.

Rain To Sun, Then Back To Rain

    Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

My dad came to Chile to visit me. It had been rainy and dark until he came; I suppose he brought good weather. Now, here I sit, the day after his leaving, looking out at the rain and clouds again. This bad weather really makes me appreciate the sunny days. Yesterday was a bummer because my dad went back home, but it was also one of the best days I’ve had on the river. As soon as we put in I was, for some reason, afraid to get out of the eddy. I sat, trying to talk myself into going out and playing, but I couldn’t. Tracy came over and made me roll a few times in the eddy; everyone of them was successful. Then, Gorski and Tracy convinced me to roll in the current. The next thing I know Jess is telling me to try to loop. By the end of the session I was getting the first half of my loop. I’m so grateful for having Jessica, Gorski, and Tracy’s patience, and me being in their group.

    Rainy Choshuenco

    Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Choshuenco is a beautiful little lakeside town, but can look very grungy, especially on a rainy day. Matt assigned us to walk around and take photos making the town look very gloomy.

    Rio Petrohue

    Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

This was mapped by Matt Smink while I was on break in the states. To get to the Rio Petrohue from Puerto Varas drive east around Lago Llanquihue. After reaching Ensenada, continue east 16 km into the park and the outlet to Lago Todos los Santos. Most of the Petrohue run is roadside. There is one section that is a national park, and is illegal to boat.

    Frozen Blueberries

    Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Yesterday we all got a surprise of going to the next town over and going to a beautiful hostel for Clay’s birthday. We learned to play croket, and the owner taught us how to make ice cream. While we were making it we couldn’t stop eating the frozen blueberries that went in. When the ice cream was done we all ate it in the hot tub, and acted like we were soup being boiled. It was so fun. Thanks Dave for the surprise!

    Achibueno Map

    Monday, December 7th, 2009

NRA held our Thanksgiving feast at the Achibueno.

After we ate we all stood and told what we were thankful for. I forgot to say how thankful I am that I have the great opertunity to map Chile rivers and share with everyone information on the rivers for a geography project. So, I’m saying it now.

    Pucon and Ojos

    Saturday, December 5th, 2009

Here in Pucon I’ve been kicking back at our base in the quincho, and hanging out. When I’m not hanging around our base, I’m out exploring the town, (which is totally awesome by the way) and public busses, or kayaking. Yesterday I ran a waterfall at Ojos Del Caburgua. We went there once before and I was too afraid to run it. I had to hear everyone’s great stories of their run. All of their stories made me so envious that I had to do it for myself. I was so nervous and scared at the top, but then I finally ran it. When I ran it, I was sooo happy I had to do it again. Pucon has so much white water and is full of adventures. I can’t wait to see what will come next!
