Sometimes, studying the many challenges that our current world faces in an Environmental Science class can be overwhelming and a bit defeating, but in reality, it is important to remember that everyone really does have the power to take action in addressing these large challenges every day. After taking a hefty mid-term, Alex Fleischut, Hayley Stuart, Eric Bartl, Galen Volckhausen, Drew Mceachern, and I journeyed down to the New River Dries to pick up trash. Taking the time to clean up a place that is home to one of the best waves in the world when it rains in the spring, is one of our after school cliff jumping, swimming, and “bum slide” spots in the fall, and is just five minutes away from New River Academy’s West Virginia base was certainly worth it!
Eric Bartl models his newly found antique flip phone, while Hayley Stuart smiles, determined to take part in the clean-up, even with a sprained ankle!
The Volckhausen collected this, along with an enormous pile of tires to recycle.
I made this video as soon as I got back to Ithaca. Everything was flooding and super brown. We ran 3 creeks in 2 days and had two encounters with the cops. Luckily for us kayaking is not a crime. The creeks we paddled in this video were Cascadilla Gorge and Merry X-mas Gorge there is a short shot of the Raquette River in the beginning.
Courtney Kerin produced this short video on the New River Gorge. Courtney is a new member of the New River Academy Video Class. She is learning very quickly! In this video she had to have a timelapse, new camera angels, and use some of the filters provided to her in Final Cut Pro. Great job Courtney.
Here is a quick short I made on our Spanish teacher and coach Lorenzo Andrade Astorga. The rivers in Chile are in danger of being dammed so this is our effort to bring some recognition to how amazing the rivers and waterways of Chile are.
Kaleb and Jacob put this video together after a week of intense eye opening coaching from Stephen Wright! Stephen is one of the best coaches in the world and it shows through the the paddling of his students! It was an honor to have him involved in the program for a little while. Thanks Stephen!
Now that we are at fast internet I want to share with you some of the videos my classes have been making. Here is one Nick Simpson made on the local kids that spend their time working at the wave we surf. Check it out!
Here is a short video made by Jacob Slobodian in New River Academy Video class. The requirements for this project were to include timelapses, text animation, and interviews.
The Rio Futaleufu is a beautiful blue river that flows through the heart of southern Chile. It is an awesome big water run that is perfect for class III-V boaters. Check out my new Futaleufu video below.
