Student Report

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

In Ottawa, Canada, the levels on the river were extremely high.  The NRA students paddled “Short Bus,” Sattlers wave, and got two amazing days on High Tension on the Gatineau in Quebec.  Everyone was progressing in their kayaking and pushing their limits on both the Ottawa and the Gatineau.  After our two weeks of amazing paddling in Canada, the group thought that the better waves of the quarter were behing us.  Little did we know what we had in store for us the next couple of days.  Upon returning to the US and our home base here in West Virginia, we got the New River Dries and about 54,000 CFS (a level that hasn’t been seen since about 2006).  After a very long sunday session, our group was still surfing some of the best waves in North America.  The middle wave on the Dries was giving up some of the biggest air of the year.  The NRA students were going far bigger than the majority of the locals there.  The level has gone down to less than 20,000 CFS, but I can speak for the whole group when i say that we got some of the best surfing of the year in a day and a half period.  Now we’re finishing up exams and the everyone is stoked for graduation this weekend.  Here are some pictures from our Sunday session on the Dries.

High Water Ottawa River

Friday, May 8th, 2009

HEY,

This is Keegan Grady checking in from the beautiful Ottawa Valley!  The last couple of weeks have been amazzing!!! Airborn Athletics Team member Devyn Scott and I headed to his home town of Almonte looking for first descents…      What we found was a perfect  25 footer beside a generating station that is under heavy construction. Devyn and I  both stomped the drop, and named it DK Falls.

The next day we ventured into the Capital City of Canada, Ottawa. It was a perfect day, we crossed Champlain Bridge into Quebec and headed up to the Deschenes Ruins. The wave was great, greening regularly and producing lots and lots of air.

The 8th Annual Level Six Capital Cup

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

The 8th annual Level Six capital cup was this past weekend in Ottawa city. It was a warm sunny day and the competition was fierce. Tents were set up and it was a day of fun starting in the early morning with the competitors meeting. The Competitors Meeting

The open women started out the event with the top 3 paddlers including Melanie Gravel, Sandra Kiviaho, and our very own Julia Fisher. All of the women did great some of them it was their first competition ever.  The judges were also top notch and included Billy Harris, Keegan Grady, Kalob Grady along with others.  The women did great. Up next was the Pro Junior girls which included three New River Academy ladies Alex Shallhorn, Palmer Miller, Tracy D’Arbeloff, and precious student Katie Kowalski. Palmer MillerThe

It was a tough competition all of these girls are very good friends and were nailing moves. Blunts and roundhouses were their game.  Katie Kowaski dominated the junior girls category with Alex Shallhorn in a close second. The competition was really kicking off now with the red bull tent and all of the visitors hopefully some of them will get into paddling. The junior men was a big category with eleven competitors. The New River Academy boys defiantly brought their stuff to the table crushing the competition. Issaac Holden, Josh Mills, and Keegan Grady made it into the finals with Keegan sweeping up the competition with a score of 106.  His little brother Kalob Grady missed out on finals by a couple of tricks. The Men’s category was huge with twenty-nine competitors, with three heats. Four New River guys were bringing the fire and fear to the other competitors eyes. Jason Craig got into to finals and placed fourth.Jason Craig Jason is only 15 and was up against men who were a lot older then him. The top three paddlers were Dave Nieuwenhuis, Billy Harris, and Joel Kowalski, who is the new level six capital cup champion. Billy Harris nails a hard move

The day was full of fun festivities with a BBQ and tents from local paddling clubs. The Nepean high school was nice enough to volunteer and help out the event. Tyler Lawlor did a great job hosting the event. Hopefully New River Academy can be back for the 9th annual Level Six Capital Cup.

Huge Move Of The Day

Huge Move of the Day goes to Keegan Grady with a Gigantic Pan Am on suprise wave on the New River. Enjoy!

The Start of Something Huge…

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Hey Everyone!

New River Academy is full of young rippers who are always going HUGE. But a lot of the time the footage of the huge moves doesn’t make it to your eyes. I’ve had an idea for a while to solve this problem for a while and now I am finally putting it into action. Every Day I will be posting up a clip of the biggest move thrown that day in Raw Un Editted form, just the way we saw it. We have had Suprise for the past two days in a row so we have a few extra tricks as the kick off to this new idea.

The First is a PAn Am from yours Truly. The funny thing about it was that it stalled out half way through. Let me know what you think. The Resolution isn’t the best but we’ll be fixing that soon!
