Essence of the Ottawa River Valley

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Yesterday in photo class we went out to capture the essence of the Ottawa river valley. The country side, the country roads, train track and a decrepit train. These photo are examples of all the skills that we have learned thus far as well as our own talents at staging photos. the subjects of my photos are Melina: blue sweater, Taylor: dress and purple sweater, and Eric in the brown jacket. My photos were taken just outside of the Keenerville base on some train tracks as well as on an old parked train. I think it was parked because it was empty, and rusty, I also hoped that it was not a ghost train! Take a look at all these great pictures.

Fall Stroll With Photography Class

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Yesterday, for our photo class Melina suprised us by taking us on a nice fall stroll. We stopped at this little glorious place on the side of the road that had so many places to capture action. We had a picture taking spree because of all the perfect picture oppurtunites. I had fun being the model for some but I also enjoyed being the director too. It was so cool setting them up where I wanted them to be in my shots. For my photos, I had people hiding in the field of cattails playing hide and seek almost. I also had them playing around a do not trespass sign because we all like living on edge. We are kayakers after all. Well I hope you enjoy perusing my photos as much as I enjoyed taking them the other day.

Le grand Lachine

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Two in one day, new record, eh?

There is little bad to say about Lachine, it is just about one of the greatest waves in all of the world. Lachine rapid is in the middle of the Quebec city of Montreal, about 4 hours away from here (Ottawa River), but the drive is totally worth it. Picture a ten foot tall wave with a nice pile and sweet shoulder. The clear blue water comes rushing into the wave super fast which makes for great trick throwing as well as the right shoulder that is amazing for throwing left into the pit. I did a few blunts where i never thought i was going to return to the earth. The wave is out in the middle of the river which requires a super long ferry out to an island which we use as a staging area. When you flush off of the wave you are required to push, walk and pull up your boat over a long section of rocks and shallows. When the day is done Lachine is still one of the greatest waves in the world and makes me proud to be a Quebexican.

Here at New River Academy we have excellent photo and video classes. These past few weeks for photo class we have been going over basics like depth of field, the rule of thirds, leading lines, and correct aperture and shutter speed. As well as teaching English Melina is also the photography teacher here at NRA, but Melina is not the only skilled photographer other members of the staff like Matt Smink and David are both excellent at the photographic arts. Below are some pictures of examples of depth of field, framing, and the the great Ottawa River valley country side (taken only 1hr ago). Look for many other examples of my photos coming soon to other blogs and Paddlinglife.net,
