Spring Semester 2011: Africa, US, and Canada's Mini-Buseater

Africa's White Nile

Huge Experiences Best Trip

africa savannah
If you apply for spring semester your class will be in the heart of the savannah.

For years New River Academy has considered Africa as a school destination. Director David Hughes had led a trip to Africa in ’98 and wanted to make certain Uganda followed Huge Experiences’ rules for international success: a safe destination, academic and cultural value, and excellent whitewater. Research found that with proper preparation safety, education, and training make Africa’s White Nile New River Academy’s newest destination.

Now for the fun stuff lets talk about the river. You are going to surf, run rapids, walk back up and do it again and again. You will produce videos or photos, study science within the savannah, interact with a new culture, and master freestyle moves like you never imagined.

Each World Championships year paddlers migrate to the White Nile as the superior training destination. Imagine having your pre-calc class in the heart of the savannah, each day after school grabbing your gear excited to throw a blunt-nasty, and maybe spot a giraffe or zebra on your shuttle home. The White Nile provides class II to V options with the best play wave features on the planet. If you love play boating then consider applying for this semester.

Your visit to Uganda will also include cultural exploration to villages and local schools. Geography, English, and science students will be excited to utilize the surroundings within their curriculum.

Fourth Quarter: United States and Canada’s Mini-Buseater and High Tension Waves:

Your final tour will bring you full circle back to West Virginia and the Ottawa River. This time you will be riding spring flows, giant waves, and waterfalls. Your fourth quarter begins on Georgia’s Tullulah Gorge, next traveling to North Carolina’s Green River and Tennessee’s Rock Island. Then it is a return to whitewater heaven in West Virginia. Surfing the New River Dries just 3 minutes from your home base is always exciting. Your final leg will be a trip north to the Ottawa’s famous Mini-Buseater and maybe even the Gatineau’s High Tension waves.

You will return to West Virginia for finals week, Advanced Placement exams, and graduation ceremonies.

Earning your diploma and walking the stage on the brow of the New River Gorge is a proud moment for both students and families. Contact us today for parent references or to learn more.
